Tis The Season

Tis the season for thankfulness and abundance.  Tis the season for friendships and obligations.  Tis the season for stormy nights and Hallmark movies.  The year is wrapping up and yet there is a slow crawl to the end.  We don’t know what the holidays will look like yet, we don’t know what the future holds and we are pinned in the middle of the here and now.  We have officially stepped into the threshold of the holiday season.  And I think it is time we celebrate.  It is time to give our quiet moments to all the people and all the chaos in our lives.

This season, lets put down our phones and put social media on hold.  Let’s go hear music on a Thursday night or go for a walk in the middle of a rain storm.  Lets throw snowballs and have dance parties.  Lets watch Hallmark movies and drink champagne.  This year, lets hug people close to us and smile at strangers passing by.  This year, lets cause some trouble in the right ways.  It is time to put on our party pants and celebrate.  It is time to embrace life with our eyes wide open and our hearts full.

To get this season started off right, don’t give yourself excuses.  Don’t ruin your celebrations with stress and angst.  Set yourself up for success and end the year on a high note.  One of the best ways to keep your mind and body in check is to care for yourself.  This season, don’t make excuses, just do it.  Don’t think about getting up at 6am to workout.  It is going to be dark, it is going to be cold and there is a high probability that it will be raining and windy.  Pour yourself a hot cup of coffee, throw on your workout clothes and just get out the door.  You will not be alone and you will start the day doing something for yourself.  And as the season gets busier and busier, don’t let the excuses pull you away.  Trust me, working out this time of year is going to do a lot more good than staying in bed an extra 45 minutes.

Don’t fear the holiday temptations.  There is going to be chocolates lining every check out counter at the grocery store.  Social media is going to be over flowing with every baked good your taste buds could imagine.  There will be reasons to overindulge and feast at every turn.  There can always be a full bottle of wine waiting for you.  Don’t over think it.  Enjoy all that lies ahead.  Eat and drink for all the right reasons.  Girls night in is a perfect time to keep the wine glass full.  Baking cookies with the minis isn’t complete without licking the bowl and tasting some dough.  Try to keep your holiday indulgences to moments that will create memories.  Maybe sneaking into the pantry to eat chocolate chips out of the bag can wait until after the holidays.

There will be holiday parties to dress up for, there will be dinners to cook for and don’t forget the magic we try to create for the little ones in our lives.  All of these special moments comes at a price.  To make sure you keep it genuine and heartfelt, care for yourself first this season.  Give yourself a break, a high five, and a huge ass hug.  This is a time to lock yourself in the bathroom for a long bath and a good book.  This is the time to put your headphones in and dance like you are the back up dancer for Britney Spears.  Give yourself an excuse to buy something special.  Or put on some sexy heels and a little extra make up.  Just make sure the stresses of the season take a back seat to the fun that lies ahead.

We deserve happiness in whatever form we can find it.  No more shaming and blaming, no more judging and glaring.  Lets just enjoy the moment and the shit show that we bring with us.  We finally get to plan ahead for new experiences and brighter futures.  We finally get to visit with families and watch our kids play sports.  We finally get to meet new people and celebrate indoors.  While we start to enjoy these simple luxuries, we should still get up early in the morning for our workouts.  We should still eat as best as we can until the holidays pass.

We should still take care of ourselves.  Because the last thing we need to do is let the holidays bring us down.
