One Size Fits None

So often we look at the way someone looks or the way they act and we wish we could be like them.  We try to figure out what their secret to success is.  Well, there is no secret to success.  One size doesn't fit all.  If life were that simple we wouldn’t have to learn from our mistakes because people would have already made those mistakes.  Mistakes and all, we have to own who we are.  We are the only size that fits us.  This is a hard mentality to enter into.  We ask for advice, we ask for guidance all in hopes to come a little closer to what we are and who we want to be.  And after we spend all that time learning, we still need to spend time alone to really let it resonate with where you are at that exact moment.

It is easy to see this in the world of working out.  In my classes, people are different, different body types, different injuries, different stresses.  These people do pretty much the same exercises day in and day out.  They work out side by side and minus the few modifications that take place, the same workout looks very different from person to person.  Some people are quick and explosive, some people are strong and steady and most are a combination.  Each person has what we call their super power.  Each persons super power is different.  One of the most important things I enjoy about teaching, is helping people find their super power.  Not because it is what makes them better at something, but it is what makes them their own individual athlete.

Another important thing to remember, don’t follow the workout because you want to look like someone else or because someone swears it’ll make you look long and lean.  Like most, I have done this myself.  I have started a workout regimen because someone doing it had the body I thought I needed.  I would commit and work hard only to find my body didn’t take to it the same way.  I have people that have been coming to my classes for years and each one of them has a totally different body than they started with but none of them have the same body as the others.  Each person takes their own path to success and most of them stumble along the way.  Sometimes they find similarities but never is it the same path.  Because the same thing never works the same way for two different people.

As much as I can talk about fitness and the differences our bodies will look and feel after the same workout.  The same applies to nutrition.  I am sure we have all, at some point in time, changed our eating habits because someone else had and saw amazing results.  Maybe that person cut out carbs and lost a lot of weight, and when we tried it, we ended up eating trail mix all day and gaining weight.  Maybe that person started eating 6 - 8 small meals a day and found they had more energy, and when we tried doing the same thing we were hungry all day.  Our bodies are totally different and those differences are what makes us unique, it is what gives us our super powers.

I feel like I should have some amazing success story to add.  I feel like I should be able to give you the steps to follow to find your way to your success story.  But this is more about closing your eyes and quieting your mind and thinking about what makes you, you.  How do you eat when you feel the greatest, not just looking in the mirror, but sleeping, lowered stress, happy?  What does your nutrition look like when you are meal prepping and have time to sit and enjoy your food?  What sort of exercise keeps you motivated, what gets you up in the morning and helps you fall asleep at night?  And the same applies for friendships, which ones make you feel fuller and happier?

Most of the time the people around you will see your success and not your failures.  Most of the time they will see your super powers and probably even give you super powers you never knew you had.  Find the things that make you feel like you are being a better version of yourself.  Because you are the only size for you.  Find where you feel most comfortable, most happy and honor that in yourself.
